Paloma becomes a hurricane
Paloma has strengthened quickly to a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said in its 7 p.m. advisory.
From the NHC: “PALOMA RAPIDLY STRENGTHENS INTO A CATEGORY 1 HURRICANE . . .A HURRICANE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE CAYMAN ISLANDS. A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED WITHIN THE WARNING AREA WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS. PREPARATIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY SHOULD BE RUSHED TO COMPLETION.”
The storm 168 miles south of Grand Cayman is packing winds of 75 mph and is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane by Friday. It’s moving north at 12 mph.
South Florida remains outside the forecast track, which sees the storm weakening slightly as it reaches Cuba by Sunday. It is projected to lose strength to a tropical storm as it moves northeast toward the Bahamas.
Paloma becomes the eighth hurricane of the season and the 16th named storm overall.

Tropical Storm Paloma forms
MIAMI — Forecasters say Tropical Storm Paloma has formed off the coast of Nicaragua with winds reaching 40 mph, and could strengthen into a hurricane by Friday.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami shows the storm could make landfall over Cuba as a hurricane. The track shows it could weaken and continue toward the Bahamas. A tropical storm watch has been issued for parts of Honduras and Nicaragua, and several inches of rain are expected in those countries.
