4-H workshops

Pitt County 4-H will sponsor a number of workshops for youth this summer at the Pitt County Agricultural Center, Government Circle. June's schedule includes:


 

Fly Fishing, 8:30 a.m.-noon Thursday for ages 11-18. Participants will go on a fishing trip. Participants should bring sunscreen, tackle and fly rod and should have a travel permission form. Cost is $3.

Lamb and Goat Camp, ages 6-10, 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-4 p.m. June 23-27 at the Pitt County Fairgrounds. Participants will learn to care for lambs or goats and will practice proper showing techniques. Participants will have a chance to participate in a livestock show. Cost is $30, and preference will be given to first-time participants.

Egg Hatching, 10-11:30 a.m. or 1:30-3 p.m. June 25 for ages 5-14. Participants will learn about embryology and will get a chance to see eggs and baby chicks. The program is free.

Enrollment is limited, and payment is required in advance. Call 902-1710.

6-7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at ViQuest Center, 2610 Stantonsburg Road. Children participate in fitness activities and nutrition lessons built around the theme of the feature story. The program is free to ViQuest members and is $5 for others. Participants must register the day before. Call 847-6501.

Girls' conditioning

Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation will sponsor Strength and Conditioning for Girls beginning in July.

The program, for girls ages 13-18, will focus on healthy eating, proper body mechanics and fitness habits. The program will use physically challenging activities to aid in the improvement of flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength.

Sessions will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from July 9-28.

Fitness training

The Greenville Recreation and Parks Department's Aquatics and Fitness Center will offer fitness training for kids and teens Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 24-July 24.

Resistance Training for Kids, for ages 6-12, will meet from 4:30-5:15 p.m. Participants will do a variety of cardiovascular and resistance training exercises.

Strength and Conditioning, for ages 12-18, will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Participants will do a variety of cardiovascular and muscle-strengthening exercises.

Cost is $20 for members and $40 for others. Call 329-4041.

Goose Creek

Goose Creek State Park, 2190 Camp Leach Road, Washington, N.C., will sponsor the following programs. Programs are held in the Environmental Education Center unless otherwise indicated.

Seining on the Pamlico, 10 a.m. Saturday. Discover the diversity of fish species that live in the brackish water of the Pamlico River. Participants should meet at the swim beach and should come prepared to get their feet wet.

Red Wolves of Eastern North Carolina, 3 p.m. Sunday. Learn what is happening with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife's program to reintroduce the red wolf into the ecosystem.
