Letter: Same-day registration will boost voting

Tuesday, September 04, 2007

During the 2004 presidential election, many citizens registered to vote within the 25 days before the election. But on Election Day, turnout was disappointing because so many registered voters didn't vote.

Some reasons why registered voters didn't vote were because of long lines, and some citizens just didn't go to the polls or just forgot to vote.

With same-day voter registration now in effect, there will be an increase in voter turnout. Citizens will have no reason not to participate in the election process.

They can use early voting sites, which normally have shorter lines and citizens don't have to worry about what precinct they must show up at to vote.

Same-day voter registration is not only good for presidential elections, but more important for municipal election, where citizens' votes directly affect them.

The NAACP hopes this law will get more young citizens and minorities to do their civic duties. So the NAACP challenges all citizens to go to the polls and "just go vote!"
